Parts, Planning & Inspection

Know your Parts:
• Chassis – the “backbone” of the snowmobile

• Engine – the power plant that runs the drive system

• Electrical System – runs lights, electric start, gauges, etc.

• Exhaust System – carry waste out from motor and quiets the engine

• Suspension System – give smooth ride and better handling

• Steering System – uses skis along with other components to steer your snowmobile

• Drive System – uses energy from the engine to turn wheels, belts and chains to move the track

Planning the Ride:
    • No matter how short the ride may be you always need to plan for the unexpected. Where,     when, how long and with who! Always let someone know where you are going.

    • Tool Kit - Two screw drivers (1 phillips and 1 standard), locking pliers, rags, trash bag, set of     wrenches, electrical tape and starter cord. Don't assume you have a tool kit in your snowmobile.     Always check it to make sure the proper tools are in the kit.

    • First Aid Kit - Band-aids and ace bandage, adhesive tape, antiseptic and sterilizer, small     scissors and safety pins, gauze pads, aspirin and cotton balls, tweezers and needle, razor     blade or folding knife and first aid cards.

    • Survival Kit - Pocket mirror, plastic whistle, wooden matches, aluminum foil, spool of wire, bag     of candy or other energy source , duct tape and piece of sandpaper. Sand paper is to light the     matches. Aluminum foil and wire is to make a cup to melt snow in to drink. Never eat snow. Melt     it into liquid first.

    • Other items- cell phone, tow rope, 2-way radios

Pre-Ride Inspections:   Watch This Video
    • Before every trip do a pre-start checklist.

    • Check all fluids first – fuel, oil, coolant, brake fluid

    • Steering system – check skis for bends or cracks and make sure skis turn left and right

    • Throttle – make sure it springs back and does not stick

    • Brakes – should depress about ½ to ¾ way to grips

    • Lights – all lights working. If not, get them working

    • Track – not ripped, worn or loose

    • Suspension – check the springs and shocks
